Legendary woman; warrior teacher; Ulster Cycle figure
Scáthach
Scáthach is a legendary warrior teacher in medieval Irish tradition, remembered especially through stories of Cú Chulainn's training, ordeal, and transformation.
The surviving material does not give a single settled biography. Medieval literary episodes, later geographic associations, folklore, and modern reinterpretations should be kept distinct.
In the Cú Chulainn training traditions preserved through texts such as The Training of Cú Chulainn and The Wooing of Emer, Scáthach's importance is pedagogical and initiatory. She is dangerous because she holds knowledge, terrain, and tests that ordinary heroic society cannot provide.
